On 14 October 1999, Vassilev Maritime Limited established a 99% owned subsidiary, Vassilev Maritime Nakliyat ve Dis Ticaret Limited Sirketi in Istanbul. Besides the agency and broking services, the newly established Company became involved in two more spheres of the shipping business - ship management, and ship supply.

13.02.2004 m/v Strontsiy

During a gale storm, the vessel was thrown by the waves on the rocky beach in the vicinity of Kilyos at the Black Sea entrance of the Bosporus Straits. The whole crew was rescued and repatriated. The vessel was declared total loss.

18.03.2004 m/v Nikolay Meshkov

In 18 of March 2004 in the vicinity of the southern entrance of Bosporus strait, m/v Porda unexpectedly changed her course towards m/v N. Meshkov and provoked collision when both vessels were in a very close distance to each other.

M/v N. Meshkov sustained damages which were compensated by the Owners of m/v Porda. Both vessels did not lose seaworthiness and remained afloat.

21.04.2004 m/v Zhadeit

The company completed the renewal procedure for m/v Zhadeit to the 3 SS standard and class KM*L4 II SP 3.5 of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

04.07.2004 m/v Volgo-Don 5025

M/v Volgo-Don 5025 sank after collision with m/v Sunrays 20 nm. offshore cape Kaliakra, Bulgaria. Two crew members were lost. The rest of the crew was rescued and repatriated.

On 10.12.2007 at 01:55 MSK upon sailing from the Port of Poti with pilot on board m/v Seabreeze was involved in collision with m/v Vesta, while the later manoeuvred to enter inside the port.

It was ascertained damage in the vessel?s hull in the area of the cargo hold No 4 below the water line.

While proceeding to the port of Nemrutbey with cargo of steel scrap m/v Volgodon 5021 encountered three rubber boats with distressed people.One of the boats had capsized and its crew was in the sea. All distressed people were rescued,

given first medical aid, food and drinks.The rescued people identified their nationality ? Afghan. Turkish authorities and the Afghan Consulate General in Ankara were properly informed about the incident.

27.07.2007

Under the condition that vessel?s owner would pay all repatriation expenses the distressed Afghan refugees were disembarked from m/v Volgodon 5021 and accommodated in police facilities in Izmir.The shipowner pre-paid 20 airway tickets from Istanbul to Kabul to Afghanistan Ariana Airlines.

30.07.2007

The group of 13 refugees was sent to Istanbul where the Afghanistan Consulate issued temporary documents for them. Afghanistan Ariana Airlines flew the 13 refugees home the same day. The owner of m/v Volgodon 5021 was the proud sponsor of their airway tickets to Kabul.

01.08.2007

Afghanistan Ariana Airlines refused to return to the shipowner the money for the pre-paid 7 airways tickets which had not been used.

The lessons we learned:

1.According to Turksih law it is not the duty of the master to rescue people at sea in Turkish territorial waters. This duty is imposed to the Turkish Coastguard. In the event that the vessel encounters people that need to be rescued the master of the vessel has to stand by and call the Turkish Coast Guard.

2.Unless the shipowner of the vessel rescued refugees accepts officially to cover all repatriation expenses of the refugees or stowaways, the Turkish immigration authorities will not allow disembarkation of refugees or stowaways and their repatriation from Turkey.

3.The Afghanistan diplomatic missions in Turkey do not to provide funds for the repatriation of their citizens - refugees or stowaways.

Afghanistan Ariana Airlines continues refusing to return to the shipowner the money for the pre-paid 7 airways tickets which had not been used.

Ariana Afghan Airlines finally refunded the overpaid money.
